Now inside Mungo National Park and World Heritage Area, Mungo Woolshed was built in1869 on the then Gol Gol pastoral station using drop log construction. The shearing board is set up for up to 30 shearers and, as was usually the case, each shearer had a catching pen for unshorn sheep and, after shearing, the sheep were shoved down the chutes into the tally pens. This shot is looking along the catching pens with the chutes on the RHS. The shearing board is out of shot to the right.
Mungo woolshed was last used in the 1970s but with sunlight slanting through the cracks and the smell of lanolin and sheep still present, you can almost hear the shed in operation.
Very evocative visit as growing up on a farm, it was all hands on the board at shearing time. I was variously the tar boy, the dagger, the wool press operator, the board sweeper and general rouseabout.
