My Mill by artsygang

My Mill

I had a go at painting this and when I emailed Vikster, for a chatty up date, attached a photo as I know she likes the mill too . Her critique was similar to mine of the photograph, too much empty space in the middle!

I could have added more details, some weeds, some boats, some birds, but it was quicker to make it a 3D design with two sharp creases!!!

What do you think???!!!
@30pics4jackiesdiamond I like your quick and easy solution!

The lighting on the photograph of the mill is dark so the painting appears darker than it probably is. I don't really understand the comment about the 3D effect because I can't see the creases.

@randystreat I folded away the middle bit Kathy!! Now it stands up as a zig zag looking smaller

@30pics4jackiesdiamond Well, you might have painted the boat closer :D :D :D Just a penny thought!
As for the painting itself, the mill reflection is too dark for my liking. A possible fix might be (not sure if it will work) to add a white layer on top of the reflection, with horizontal strokes, so that when the layer beneath activates, it gives that ripple and also blurred effect. Of course, it might ruin everything, as that black/dark gray pigment looks quite strong. So you might want to be quick when you do that and mind your strokes.
Ooooor.... you might just leave it as it is :D
But I love the idea of folding the paper. That's creative.

@30pics4jackiesdiamond - take your smallest brush and wet it just so in white or the colour of your water, then paint alternating horizontal strokes (some long, some short, some faint, some strong) around the mill reflection, to give an illusion of ripples or waves.

@30pics4jackiesdiamond very creative to create a z-fold picture. I agree with both Monika and Vikki re how to potentially soften the reflection of the mill. There are some cool tutorials out there that show you how to fix some issues when using watercolours. I might have saved some of the links.
