In order to comply with the requirement of the gang to not be so harsh on ourselves, here is another attempt at rendering a street scene at night. I'm not there yet, but I surely am one step closer.
Thanks for your support and encouragement!
I most certainly appreciate any ideas or suggestions or critique you have. @monikozi
Oh that is fun. I like the light splays. Probably the trees would be less colourful and much darker as they are backlit so strongly? But I like the feel of it. Good atmosphere.
@casablanca The trees seem backlit because I did not paint too close to the foliage... :D My intention was that they have some light on either side, where the lamp light would reach the foliage.
Thanks a lot for the suggestion.
@salza It's darn hard when there's not a referrence image (live or photo). And when the skill is poor. And when the knowledge about how the light should behave is also poor.
Actually, it is a completely different approach from day scenes. And it came to me like a blow in the back of my head.
Thanks for the support!
@monikozi This is more what I had in mind with the lights! Well done. My only suggestion would be to soften the edges of dark a little more for a less sharp lin between light and dark. Easy to say for me and probably NOT as easy to do. So well done here with a definite feel of night time girl!
@grammyn Oh, I read the comments in reverse order... :D Yes, you are totally right: that light needs to transition more softer into the dark. Absolutely accidentally I managed somehow to do that on the pavement... more or less, especially on the cobble stone. There, I lifted up some colour while it was still wet.
Thanks a lot!
I like this, my only comment (and its certainly not a criticism because you've done a fabulous job) is that the lines between light and dark would look better softer.
@kjarn Kathy, I really need points of view. So, criticism, or not, it is useful and I appreciate your taking the time to look and give an opinion. As I said somewhere, I do not have reference photos or experience or tutorials. And what I have in my mind about light and dark is totally wrong.
Eventually, i noticed too that that line is too sharp for the light coming from a street lamp. Even if sometimes light in the night seems very sharp edged, the transition is rather diffused. Thanks!
I like this one very much. The only time I tried something in watercolour at night was in my caravan intake night shot and this is so much better. Ok maybe the light of the lanterns is a bit to hard ( maybe if you tried it in goache on top of the night painting) but overall it gives a very good night feel.
