"Memorial Day was originally called "Decoration Day." In 1869, the head of an organization of Union veterans, Maj. Gen. John A. Logan, established Decoration Day as a way for the nation to honor the graves of those who died in the Civil War with flowers, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
The holiday takes place annually on the last Monday in May and is a dedicated day for honoring U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces.
Over 1.3 Million Americans have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their nation." NBC

My great grandfather Lewis fought in the Civil War, he is buried here with his second wife, Mabel. His first wife died very young. They had four children together. He remarried a much, much younger woman and she had eight more, children. One was my paternal grandfather. He served in WWI with his brother Leon who was killed in action and is also buried here after his remains were brought home from France in the early 1920s. At the town Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance Ceremonies, Great Uncle Leon will receive a gun salute at this gravestone.

This year I was able to do the planting. Last year I was 10 days out from my hip replacement. We moved on to my parents, both sets of grandparents and my paternal great great grandparents graves.Tomorrow we will go to T's family graves and do the same.

For the Record,
This day came in sunny and cool, delightful.

All hands remembering family
I would like to visit my family graves on Monday.
