Lullingstone Roman Villa by bigmxx

Lullingstone Roman Villa

Day 194 - Today we made use of our English Heritage card and went to look around a Roman Villa. Evidence of the villa was first recorded around 1750 during the erection of a fence at Lullingstone deer park, it's full discovery took place in 1939 and is one of the best preserved Roman Villas in the country. It was built around the AD100's and was inhabited for about 300 years, during which time the building was extended and altered. The dining room of the villa was decorated in the 4th century with a mosaic depicting the abduction of Europa by Jupiter in the guise of a bull. Mosaics, frescos and the bathing complex are just some of the features to have survived and are on view to the public.
Nice detail, often difficult in such places to get enough light. We have quite an interesting Roman Villa on the Isle of Wight.

@chrisiow The lighting was a pain as they had different coloured lights going on and off!
@susiemc We've just joined English Heritage so watch this space for more places!
Thank you both for your comments :)
