Welcome to day one of this weeks tour of the Alberta Legislative Building. Alberta became a Province on Sept. 1, 1905. Two years later the government hired A. M. Jeffries from Rhode Island to design the provincial capital building.
The style he chose is the beaux arts style which is very popular amongst many government capital buildings in Canada and the United States.
The exterior of the building features two types of stone. The botttom is granite from Vancouver Island and the top along with the pillars is sandstone from Calgary and also from Ohio
Our tour starts facing the south entrance of the building.
The feature of this side is the arches, the pillars and the portal type windows at the very top
The building took five years to build 1907-1912. It cost $2 million dollars and this fall the government will be holding special celebrations to honor the 100 years
