A few days ago l posted a picture of the Lt. Governor's residence. Here is a photo of the original one.
Built in 1912-1913 at a cost of $345,000.
It opened in Oct. of 1913.
The Lt. Governor and his family used this residence from 1913-1938.
In 1938 Lt. Governor John C. Bowen refused to give Royal Assent to three bills introduced and passed in the Legislature by the government.
In retaliation the premier and cabinet shut of all utiltities to the building forcing the Bowen family to move out. Shortly there after the building was sold.
During construction of the Alaska Highway it was used as a boarding house for American pilots and construction workers. It was then used by the federal government as a military hospital and covelescent home for veterans.
In 1964 the provincial government bought the building back and it underwent major renovations.
Today it used for cabinet meetings and other state functions. It is also open for free tours to the public
Beautiful building shot. Thank you for the history of this building. I think I like the architecture better for the original house of the Lt. Governor.
