Melody and l were sitting in church when l noticed the hymn book siiting on the piano. After we got home l looked up the company as l had never heard of a Dominion Piano.
The company was founded in 1870 in Oshawa Ontario as the Darley & Robinson Co. It later became the Oshawa Organ and Melodeon Manfacturing Co.
It relocated to Bowmanville Ontario in 1873. In 1875 it was renamed the Dominion Organ Co. In 1879 they added a piano factory.
The company would eventually close its doors in 1936
What a great find! I've got an original Paling & Co upright piano - before the company became a family company... such a great thing to have. Mine was made around WWI, and now there's not that many left in Australia which are Aussie made - they're all made in China and sound too soft. Mine is very loud and gorgeous too! :D
I had never heard of that company either- how fun to learn about them. It's too bad the company closed down- but the 30's were certainly a tough era and I'm sure a lot of people were not buying pianos then. Nice shot.
