I was inspired by someone's photo of a painting they had done. It set me thinking about this one done by Peter's Granddad in 1916. When we took the picture apart to reframe it we discovered the words 'Outrebois near Doullens' written on the back. One year we decided to try and find this place near Amiens in France. We found several likely places before we found the very spot along the river, much changed now with the passage of time. When we turned around we saw the village sign saying Outrebois, so we were sure this was it. Jack was a member of the Artillery and would be given days off from the front line away from the fighting, and it would have been during these times that he painted this picture.
Oh how moving and what an amazing thing to have. When you said near Amiens 1916 I was sure you wouldn't have found it - that area was so devastated so I'm really glad you did. And it's such a peaceful shot - what a time they had to endure - from hell to heaven and back again. Did you see Birdsong on Sunday? Brilliant book and adaptation but such a tragedy.
Delightful photo and heart warming story. He must have found such peace in this relaxing activity because none of the horror surrounding him is evident.
