Oast houses by busylady

Oast houses

These unusually shaped houses in Kent were once free-standing kilns used for drying hops, for beer making. The vanes on top are to catch and direct the wind to dry the hops. The oldest ones were built in 1750, and most are now sought after as very desirable homes.
As I travel around Kent I'm always looking for the perfect view of an oast house, but there always seem to be some clutter in the way.

Loving the weather vanes on the top...it would be a privilege living in one if those houses!

I quite agree Bob, but I just looked up some info on their origin and there were quite a few images on the site which were uncluttered.

Aren't they beautiful, I would love to live in a house like this. I always had a fantasy about living in a round house when I was a child. Either in a lighthouse or a windmill, but an oast house would do nicely.
