The water wheel by busylady

The water wheel

We stopped at Mitchell's Gully today, between Punakaiki and Westport. It was a small historic goldmine. The remains of the mine are totally authentic. This is the water wheel which was used to drive a small ore-crushing plant. The owner's great grandfather was the original owner of the land and he's decided to carry on showing the mine to the public. He still mines a small amount of gold which he makes into rings and sells. It was a fascinating site.
What a beautiful place. Did you pan for gold yourselves ?
