Florida has had cattle for the last 500 years, since the Spanish left some cows behind. They have been known as "cracker" cows and multi-generational native Floridians are known as Crackers. The name comes from the crack of the whip.
A week ago, about 400 cattle men and women set out on a trail with hundreds of head of cattle to reenact the many cattle drives that took place in our state in years gone by. While they do this annually, they only drive the cows every 10 years.
How exciting to see these people come through the cypress trees after their week-long journey. These long-horn cattle are cracker cows. The people who participated either rode a horse or a wagon all week. They were required to wear traditional western wear or 1880's dress. I will be posting a number of photos of this fabulous event. A bucket list item for me!
