NZ dotterel

This is another image from Tiritiri Matangi Island. For the first time on the island, a NZ dotterel pair has successfully hatched a chick. It was very cute and very independent, scritching around on the beach for food. As we sidled past, as far up the beach as possible, the parent birds were warning us to stay away. Looks best on black.
What a gorgeous little chap. Welcome to the world!

@happypat I think usually two or three. These guys must've been first time parents and only had one. Apparently the nest scrape had to have sand piled up to prevent wind blown high tide from drowning everything!

How precious. It's wonderful that you got a picture of this extra special little bird. I hope many more are hatched so this little guy has lots of company.
