Just musing about the Popular Page and the Trending Page. . . I love looking at all the photos on it for inspiration and marvel. However, I see some other photos on 365 that I often wonder why they didn't make the PP or the TP. Anyone else ever wonder this? And it seems that the same people always make it - not to say that their work isn't amazing, but sometimes they have pics that are not what I would consider to be PP or TP work but they make it.
Just wondering . . . any thoughts?
Again, this is not meant as a slam, but I just wanted to know if anyone knows what constitutes making the PP or the TP. I just feel that some fabulous photographers are being overlooked.
I'm sure there was a thread on this a while go and somwone posted a blog post from a long time ago, I think, may be wrong they are computer generated by some mathicial rules depending on no of followers, your normal activities on posted work etc... But no real answer except yes some amazing work never gets there.
And remember the word is "popular",not technically or creativity amazing. You are right, there are many ,many photogs who post incredible work. But who are not really "active" on the site. You can browse by day to perhaps find some of them.
I think that there's more to it than just the number of followers. The algorithm takes into account how active the person is within the 365 community - following and commenting on other peoples photos and joining in the themes and challenges.
Yes, some strange algorithm about number of comments, favs and views over a timed period. So, therefore, it is more likely you get on the Popular Page the more active followers you have, because they will be more likely to comment quickly on your post. Well, that's my theory, anyway!
I liked it better when @scrivna just described the process as Magic Monkeys as in " The Magic Monkeys have selected the following images as most popular." Those were the days.
As several have noted, it's a formula that takes into account a range of stats including comments, followers, and favs. For example, when I started last summer, I reached PP with as few as 5 favs. Now, I've had photos with 50 favs and many more comments that reached TT, but never made it to PP. It's always good to look at photos using many tags -- trending, PP, by day, by tag, TT to see the range and wonderful array of photos on this site. Being popular may not, as others have also noted, necessarily be most creative, most technically impressive, etc., and you'd miss many of those without using other tags.
@mzzhope Agreed, those WERE the days. And yet, the same discussion thread about PP popped up on a regular basis. I do think that things also changed with the new format. I know it's great to see the photos in a larger size, but I found my abliity to keep up really went down with the change in format. I can't keep up with people I follow. I found it discouraging, and that in combination with some life commitments has severely impacted how much time I spend here on 365. I miss it so much, but just can't seem to keep up.
I've had one photo on the trending page, it had fewer comments and views than one a few days earlier that didn't make it to the trending page. So beats me. Btw, the pic was my kitten, so we know they are popular.
I've never made it on either page and I have few but lovely followers. I've had 5 comments and then seen someone with 5 comments and more followers than me on Trending page so I've given up trying to work out the mysteries!
I have made the TP four times, but never the PP page (been on 365 for about two years). I love looking at the pics and I tend to agree with a lot of the above comments. Maybe they should have a page called Photographer's Choice or Follower Faves where the amount of faves and/or comments and followers is factored in (or is it already - I'm so confused!). I think I'll go with the Magic Monkey Theory . . .
@lbluejaye8 there is a thread posted once a week called your FAV where you showcase your favorite photo of someone else.I love that thread and have found many great photogs to follow.I say...just enjoy.I love photography .I love taking pictures and viewing others pictures.PP TT Trending or absolutley no comments......I love it all the same.
Funny. I just had this conversation with my husband, but it was more about the Top 20 of the week. I've been so busy lately that I haven't had time to interact with 365 much so I've felt somewhat out of the loop. I wanted to see what photos were "hot," so checked out the last four weeks of top 20s. What I noticed there was a bit discouraging...the same people make the top 20 week after week after week. I'm not doing 365 for anyone but me, and I don't need the praises of others to boost my confidence level, but I feel for those photographers who take fantastic photos but need a little bit of encouragement to keep them going. It took me a while to realize that just because my photos don't make the PP or the TT or hit Trending status doesn't mean my photos are not worthy. Sure, it's nice if/when they actually do, but I no longer need that reassurance. I just keep shooting and learning mixed in with a whole lot of fun. That's really all that matters anyway.
@dejongdd I honestly only look at the Trending Page these days only because it seems to pick up some people I've never seen! PP and TT often have great shots, but I see the same folks usually and well, they are very committed posters, commenters, and followers. I made it to the TT this month, and I realized it was over a holiday week and probably I just happened to get in at the right time. Who knows? It was my highest ranking, and clearly not my best shot, and then someone had to tell me my shot was there because I rarely to over there. I guess, I'm with so many here--it's fine when my work does get recognized, but the thrill is taking the shots and being able to comment or visit with others (when time allows--ah, there's the rub!).
@dejongdd Well said! 365 is for me, and while I don't need the accolades of people I don't even know, I do think there should be some equity for all, not just a select few. I will keep on shooting for me and use the TP and PP for inspiration and stimulation!
@darylo I wish I had time to comment on all the lovely photos by people who support me and encourage me! It's a daunting task, and I do my best, but TP and PP aren't the be-all/end-all for me! Thanks!
@lbluejaye8 I came to the sad realization in year two that I was never going to keep up with commenting -- I don't even know how I did so much the first year, but I can't do it now, and it's ok. I love conversing about specific techniques and stuff, but I find my biggest ordeal is still getting the photo in and uploaded. The rest is icing on the cake! I'm so glad you are enjoying the site. I tell people it is the ONLY world wide virtual community that is so darned nice. Seriously...well, except for a few crabby patties, but there's always those! ;) LOL!
@darylo Agreed! I don't know what I would do without my daily dose of 365, and I have made so many wonderful new friends on here! We will keep on taking those pics whether we make the PP or TP or not! Thanks!
I'm wondering if Ace membership is considered in the magical formula? I see a few non-ace photos in the gallery so it must not be limited to ace members only. However, it is all about other viewing or commenting on your image, so they have to be able to find your image... Adding key words will make your image searchable... i'm sure that helps. The more exposure you get the better you chances. I have a hard time finding my own images in the "Browse by day" gallery and are only in the "Latest" gallery for 10 or 15 minutes. That latest gallery should have a next page option!!!
For a great start for "equity for all" I am now following you. I can't promise that I will be active on here every day, but I will do my best and make sure to check out your photos as often as possible. I look forward to seeing the beautiful work you do each day.
@dejongdd Thank you! I will follow you and everyone else on here. Not to get you all to the PP or the TP (which I'm sure many of you have), but you obviously care about your work and I can't wait to see all the fabulous pics! :)

If the PP is your goal don't be a follower seeker
An enjoyable 365 experience = just do your thang!
I think we should all have it stuck in our heads, don't you!?
Have a listen! :-)
