Recommendations for PS Composite course.

November 7th, 2019
After seeing all these wonderful composites here on this site, I feel pretty useless! Can anyone please recommend a Photoshop course that does not cost too much? There are so many being offered on FB, that I am rather uncertain as to which one to take. I know you get what you pay for, but my budget is limited. Thanks in advance 😊

Hey Diana... have you looked at what’s available on YouTube for free? There are tons of tutorials... phlearn and blue lightening tv are often quite easy to follow... and adobe has free tutorials as well... prolly these would not be as in depth as what you would pay for, but they are free and really - everything I learned about compositing was from YouTube and the kind folks on 365

well diana your editing skills are amazing so i'm sure you would soon be rocking those composites once you watch a few tutorials. i agree with @northy that there's lots available for free on youtube and elsewhere. you can probably google 'create composite with a unicorn coming out of a cruise ship's funnel in the middle of antarctica' and someone will have laid it out for you in guided steps ... rosie @rosiekerr includes the links to the composite tutorials she follows, so you could scroll back to some of hers if you fancied trying them out ... i am a big fan of brooke shaden's work and had seen that she has a compositing course on the creative live site ... not cheap, except when they offer flash sales and you get 41 excellent tutorials for $29 ... so i waited for that to pop into my inbox, and snapped it up ... no regrets ... i look forward to seeing what you come up with as it's bound to be good :)

Hi Diane, I’m doing a diploma in photography on line. We do a lot of photoshop work, and most of the tutorials we learn from are YouTube ones. I particularly like the Phlearn ones.

I'm with Northy,Clare and Carole go to University of You Tube and play - I do have a book for my version of PS (CS5) but trying a google or 'amazon' search for your version.

@northy @pistache @yorkshirekiwi @joysabin Thanks so much for your response. I have checked out a few on YouTube, but the ones that interest me are not spoken. I cannot handle that at all as I don't really know my way around photoshop yet. I bought the latest book which cost a fortune here and is so thick and very difficult to navigate through. I saw a tutorial offered in Creative Live Site on FB and might give it a go. I really have to learn it from scratch, that is why I need a tutorial. I'll have to look ans see ;-)

there's a whole series of video tutorials on the adobe site starting with the very basic stuff... might want to check those out as well...

Wow, what a great questions and so much good help. I'll have to check these out too, now that I'm journeying into this world! So I'll add my thanks to all.

I just use iPhone and iPad, but I love compositing with SuperimposeX and it comes with many tutorials. It’s a very inexpensive way to get started.

You might search the Sandbox, Sandbox365, or Sandbox 365 tutorials here on 365. It was a group that provided some lessons on photoshop techniques. We did multiplicity, levitation, and some other things.

@ludwigsdiana Some things to know about learning PS... It takes a really long time to learn the particularities of the program, so you need to have a lot of patience with yourself and the process. Honestly, I have been faffing around with PS for at least 2-3 years.

I learned everything I know by following the free tutorials on YouTube. Phlearn and Blue Lightning are good. So is the Photoshop Training Channel. Also very good - PiXimperfect. The link that @northy provided, above, is excellent. Adobe does a great job of laying out the learning process. Just start at the top of the basics list and work your way through them, one at a time.

I never spent one dollar on funding my learning curve. The only thing I spent money on is a Wacom tablet (which Aaron Nace, of Phlearn, uses and recommends). The tablet is extremely useful, but not required. If you like the spoken tutorials, I really think that Aaron Nace does a lovely job, so try Phlearn first, after you have worked through the basic Adobe tutorials linked above. Just be prepared to be patient and kind to yourself; treat every practice session as a joy, not a chore. Slowly, it will begin to start to snap into focus, but it does take a lot of time. I think you will eventually enjoy the rewards, though!

@ludwigsdiana Also, I had a chance to check the Adobe basic composite tutorials.

Here is a very simple starter tutorial, with only two images. The instructor gives clear verbal directions with illustrative steps:

This might be a good one for starting.

@northy Thanks for the link Northy. In the beginning I did start doing some of these just to get to know PS, I had forgotten about them :-)
@shutterbug49 Thanks for your input, I have so many editing programs and do not want to start with something new atm ;-)
@rosiekerr Many thanks Rosie, I realise how time consuming it all is. You have made some wonderful ones and I have checked the links you always added. Unfortunatley they were non verbal. I suppose I'll just have to get started and hang in there for a while :-)

@yorkshirekiwi @northy @rosiekerr hi ladies - so interesting to hear your recommendations here - but i'm just wondering if phlearn have changed how they operate, as it seems to me that most of their tutorials are 'pro' ones and to access these you have to pay a yearly subscription? or do you know otherwise and i am just being dense? it's a shame if that's the case as they have some pretty interesting stuff that i would love to know how to do!
November 9th, 2019
@pistache i don't know much about how Phlearn is working these days... mostly i go to the vids when i am wanting to do something specific... that is, i never set out to "learn" photoshop... i just set out wanting to do something (put a rhino in a boat, tie a bicycle to the moon, etc.) and looked for tutorials on youtube that would help me do that...
November 9th, 2019
@northy i know just what you mean! meanwhile, note to self ... must try tying a bike to the moon tomorrow :)
November 9th, 2019
@northy @pistache Could you please try tying a bike to the moon which happens to be shining over a tree for the composite 22 challenge😉 But I must agree with Northy's advice to YouTube vids for specific requirements, it may take some time and adjustments but you get there in the end

@suzanne234 shades of ET😎... it’s tempting to try, but at the moment I have a couple other ideas stuck in my head which I shall attempt first...
November 10th, 2019
@suzanne234 You are the composite queen Suzanne, what do you use for your wonderful images?
November 11th, 2019
@ludwigsdiana Diana, you are been far far to kind there! I work in gimp2.8 which is pretty much like Photoshop, only free. I have learnt everything from watching and following tutorials, mainly on youtube. Mostly I just cut things out and move them around, and use the layer modes such as multiply, grain merge etc and play around with the opacity, I'm sure you have already but if you haven't, take a look at those then have a play around to see what effect they have. There are so many clever tools most of which I have forgot so I would need to revisit the videos and all will become clear again! To be honest, you already have amazing editing skills so I don't think there is a need to pay for courses.

@suzanne234 From one kind person to another, thanks for your reply. It all looks so complicated and time consuming when I see your composites. You must be a natural talent as they are not only perfect, but witty too :-)
