Laptop

December 18th, 2022
After battling with my laptop a Lenovo ideapad 110 which had been repaired in August, the battery finally conked out and has to be replaced. It only works when plugged in, and with all our loadshedding it's not an option.

I have an older laptop of hubby, but I do not like it at all. It too has been repaired a few times and I just cannot work with it.

My question is what is everyone else using? I need to get a new one which does not cost the world and is good and fast enough for editing. Someone mentioned that gaming computers are the best, but I have no idea.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be highly appreciated, TIA

I shall follow this thread with interest as my Lenvo is struggling with the number of photos I've stored and doing Affinity work

@30pics4jackiesdiamond I've moved all my photos from my laptop to an external hard drive. Made quite a difference

@milaniet how often do you review them??

Also will follow this thread with interest. I used an IPad. I tried Apple Mac air but I was too much of a Luddite to manage it.

I have a Zephyrus G14, I think model year 2020, that I've been very happy with over the years. Not inexpensive, but there are always steep discounts during the holidays.

@30pics4jackiesdiamond at least monthly

i've always used 'acer aspire'. they're the cheapest i can find around here. in october i bought one on clearance which cost $399 and came to about $520 with taxes. the normal retail amount of it was $975. i don't load it with my photos as i used external drives and i save my sd cards with the raw copies. i heard asus is a good brand and is in the middle price range. after january i was told once is the best time to buy items like computers as there are always left over from the holiday sales. i'm not sure though if those brands are available where you are.

I just bought a new battery for my Lenovo. Is that an option?

@summerfield Thanks Vikki, they are available here and are quite cheap. I will look into it :-)
@danette Yes Danette, that is an option too. I just thought as it has had problems before that I might prefer a new one ;-)

Just a penny thought, less related to your question, but I think it is helpful. It is a good idea to store the photos on an external memory, especially if you shoot in RAW. Those are humongous files. I periodically move my photos (although I no longer shoot in raw) to the external memory, so that the disk space is not wasted. @30pics4jackiesdiamond
I now see Milanie is suggesting the same.

Where are you that you have "Loadshedding"? That sounds horrible, I'm glad I don't have that worry.

Meanwhile, I'm in the process of replacing my desktop. I've been on a 9-year-old ASUS machine running Windows 8, which Microsoft is no longer supporting as of January 1. I just bought a Dell XPS 8950 with a 27" ASUS "ProART" display, and am still moving things over to it. It was a bit pricey, but I expect to use it for the next 8-10 years. I've got 32Gig RAM, will see if I decide to upgrade that. I use an external solid state drive for all my files.

When I'm travelling, I drop all the way down to an iPad!

@lsquared Thanks Larry, I live in Cape Town South Africa! We are being kept in the dark here.

Your new setup sounds very interesting, hope you are happy with it. I have been looking at an ASUS VivoBook, but will decide in Jan after the holidays :-)

Your friends suggestion of a gaming computer is a good one. Gaming computers have excellent graphics cards, powerful CPU’s and lots of RAM all of which is perfect for post processing. I can’t recommend a laptop because I don’t use one, I have a custom made desktop built for me by my son to my specifications but a lot of the components were the same as those used in gaming computers. Whatever your decision on a laptop I strongly recommend that it have an SSD drive. This will help speed up your workflow. As suggested by others, it is a very good idea to keep your image files on an external hard drive and have them backed up elsewhere as well, preferably offsite. I use a service called Backblaze which is relatively inexpensive and worth it for the peace of mind.
