Flash of Red begins today (February 1st)! Thanks to the wonderful memory of Vikki @summerfield I can tell you this is year #10- a historic landmark of sorts I’d say! As a reminder we’re taking a creative approach this year and hopefully by the end of the month you’ll have some rather interesting black and white stripes on your monthly calendar.
Here’s the daily breakdown:
Feb. 1 (Tues)- a black and white shot in high key featuring white
Feb. 2 (Wed)- a black and white shot featuring shape
Feb. 3 (Thurs)- a black and white shot featuring lines
Feb. 4 (Fri)- a black and white shot featuring shape
Feb. 5 (Sat)- a black and white shot in high key featuring white
Feb. 6 (Sun)- a black and white shot in low key featuring black
Here’s some simple definitions to help you get started:
High key photography is a style of photography that uses unusually bright lighting to reduce or completely blow out dark shadows in the image. High key shots usually lack dark tones and the high key look is generally thought of as positive and upbeat.
How do you make a picture high-key?
Spread the light. Use as much light as possible and make sure that your light fills the space you are working in or the area where you are shooting.
A low key image is one that contains predominantly dark tones and colors. Like high key images, low key photography conveys atmosphere and mood. But where a high-key image feels airy and light, a low-key is usually dramatic and full of mystery.
How do you make a picture low-key?
Set your camera to manual mode. Set your ISO as low as it will go and your shutter speed as fast as you'd like. Once you've set up the shot, adjust your aperture to a low f-number. After you take a practice shot, narrow the aperture down until there's no light in your frame.
I have also found that playing with the + and – settings can give the feel of a high key or low key shot no matter what light is available. And of course you can always fake it in post processing!
Have fun- the creative reins are completely in your hands!
@olivetreeann I am baffled by the change too. Was about to set up a high key white shot but this list now says shape not white? Could you clarify please, lovely lady? Many thanks.
@koalagardens / @casablanca / I too will go with the original concept, to have some balance in my calendar in the end. I'm sure Ann will be ok with us renegades too. @olivetreeann
Yeah, this list doesn’t align with your original list, and I’d already begun planning that way.
“So here is the break-down:
Sunday- Low Key shots emphasizing black.
Monday- Low Key shots emphasizing black.
Tuesday- High Key shots emphasizing white.
Wednesday- Black and White photos emphasizing shape.
Thursday- Black and White photos emphasizing lines.
Friday- Black and White shots emphasizing shape.
Saturday- High Key shots emphasizing white.”
SO, I had started with the list here and now I see the other original version. I'm just wondering why the change, did the original not work out to a good pattern?
@beryl@gardencat yeah me too, looks like there is a revolt in the ranks 😂😂😂
can't wait to find out why @olivetreeann made the change, but we will all be able to compare results in 4 weeks!
@olivetreeann - I thought I'd do the Flash of Red this year as I haven't participated for a while. But like some others I started using the original list you posted with high key on Tuesdays,
You are all correct- this list was wrong- looked at the wrong calendar which is a regular one- Sunday to Saturday and completely forgot that I'd mapped out the original using the 365 calendar which goes from Monday to Sunday. So good for you for going by the original! I will fix this in the post and make sure I look at the right calendar next week!
@olivetreeann - and there i thought i was an out and out renegade. 🤣 didn't know there was a 'revolt' that went on. i saw this yesterday and thought 'oh, she changed it' and didn't look again (until now) as i liked the outline in the original announcement. but thanks for straightening this out and a lot more thanks for facilitating this. all's well that ends well. on with the show then!
Well, I guess I'll be out of step, as I went with what was here when I first looked (bw featuring shape) for today, so I'm not really sure what I'll do going forward. Considering that I'm not really a fan of either high key or low key, I'll probably just do my own thing :)
@koalagardens Monday is not on this week because the month started on Tuesday. The next post will have all 7 days- I promise.
@spanishliz That's perfectly fine Liz. I always want people to have fun and enjoy the month, stretch their creativity and/or get out of their comfort zone. So the last thing I want people to feel is pressured to do something they're unhappy with. Your project, your rules as the saying goes...
@summerfield I think I'll blame the mix-up on my 9 day induced coma. My brain certainly has its fuzzy moments now that I never had before- and it's not like the "old age" fuzziness! Come to think of it, this coma comes in handy for a lot of mis-steps! hehehe
Thanks Ann for doing this again, and I look forward to participating. Makes sense to me that the list would start on the first day of the month.....going with that list in the original feed.
Oops, I've posted two wrongly now ... So, I'm going to leave what I've already posted, and post day 1 tomorrow, then get back on track. After tomorrow I'll juggle the dates to fit this post, I think! He he.
@olivetreeann you're a stellar star!!! Hoping your recovery continues in an upward trajectory and that your photography brings joy. Looking forward to your interpretations of the prompts!!
@theredcamera I'm looking forward to your pictures too Ellen! Both the original feed and this post now agree. I corrected it.
@jamibann You can continue to follow what you've already started or change the dates on the ones you've posted- whatever works best for you. The idea of the specific prompts for each day was to create vertical stripes at the end of the month on the calendar.
@jnorthington Feb 1 was high key emphasizing white. But you can follow whatever way you'd like Judy- see the comment to Issi above.

@olivetreeann thank you for organising us, bit like herding cats I reckon!??

But it is fixed now.
@beryl You were correct Beryl- you can untwist now!
