Flash of Red February is Finally Here!!

February 1st, 2022
Flash of Red Week 1

Flash of Red begins today (February 1st)! Thanks to the wonderful memory of Vikki @summerfield I can tell you this is year #10- a historic landmark of sorts I’d say! As a reminder we’re taking a creative approach this year and hopefully by the end of the month you’ll have some rather interesting black and white stripes on your monthly calendar.

Here’s the daily breakdown:

Feb. 1 (Tues)- a black and white shot in high key featuring white
Feb. 2 (Wed)- a black and white shot featuring shape
Feb. 3 (Thurs)- a black and white shot featuring lines
Feb. 4 (Fri)- a black and white shot featuring shape
Feb. 5 (Sat)- a black and white shot in high key featuring white
Feb. 6 (Sun)- a black and white shot in low key featuring black

Here’s some simple definitions to help you get started:

High key photography is a style of photography that uses unusually bright lighting to reduce or completely blow out dark shadows in the image. High key shots usually lack dark tones and the high key look is generally thought of as positive and upbeat.

How do you make a picture high-key?
Spread the light. Use as much light as possible and make sure that your light fills the space you are working in or the area where you are shooting.
A low key image is one that contains predominantly dark tones and colors. Like high key images, low key photography conveys atmosphere and mood. But where a high-key image feels airy and light, a low-key is usually dramatic and full of mystery.

How do you make a picture low-key?

Set your camera to manual mode. Set your ISO as low as it will go and your shutter speed as fast as you'd like. Once you've set up the shot, adjust your aperture to a low f-number. After you take a practice shot, narrow the aperture down until there's no light in your frame.

I have also found that playing with the + and – settings can give the feel of a high key or low key shot no matter what light is available. And of course you can always fake it in post processing!

Have fun- the creative reins are completely in your hands!

I have made my dash for today hahahahaha
February 1st, 2022
Your original post said high key white for tomorrow Tuesday. Has that changed?
February 1st, 2022
I look forward to it!
February 1st, 2022
Thank you Ann! I have the same question as Katy @grammyn
February 1st, 2022
@olivetreeann I am baffled by the change too. Was about to set up a high key white shot but this list now says shape not white? Could you clarify please, lovely lady? Many thanks.
February 1st, 2022
oh no I'm ignoring this and going with the original as I have done so much work on mine today already - remember all, your project is your project 🤗😂
February 1st, 2022
@koalagardens Excellent point. Will follow you!
February 1st, 2022
@koalagardens Good point. Following the original even though I have done no work on mine as yet.

@olivetreeann hi - can I be added please
February 1st, 2022
@koalagardens / @casablanca / I too will go with the original concept, to have some balance in my calendar in the end. I'm sure Ann will be ok with us renegades too. @olivetreeann

Monday- Low Key shots emphasizing black.
Tuesday- High Key shots emphasizing white.
Wednesday- Black and White photos emphasizing shape.
Thursday- Black and White photos emphasizing lines.
Friday- Black and White shots emphasizing shape.

@olivetreeann Hi Ann, Carole and I have a D in our name, Sandford, for future tags 😜
February 1st, 2022
Anne I'm sticking to your original plan!! I've mapped it out, and though I'm sure I won't stick to it........
February 1st, 2022
I am also a renegade, having planned at least few things to the original outline. Let's see how this goes!
February 1st, 2022
0Ooh dear , what do I do I had started with the original list with high key today ( tues )! Now I have my knickers in a twist !!!!!!!! Ha !!
February 1st, 2022
SO, I had started with the list here and now I see the other original version. I'm just wondering why the change, did the original not work out to a good pattern?
February 1st, 2022
@beryl @gardencat yeah me too, looks like there is a revolt in the ranks 😂😂😂
can't wait to find out why @olivetreeann made the change, but we will all be able to compare results in 4 weeks!
February 1st, 2022
Oh, my goodness, good thing I got on my computer today. I love this challenge.
February 1st, 2022
Wow I’m confused Ann, I was planning my week according to your original list of Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday ! 🙃
February 1st, 2022
@koalagardens our project etc etc!!

@olivetreeann thank you for organising us, bit like herding cats I reckon!??
February 1st, 2022
@olivetreeann - I thought I'd do the Flash of Red this year as I haven't participated for a while. But like some others I started using the original list you posted with high key on Tuesdays,
February 1st, 2022
@grammyn @njmom3 @casablanca @njmom3 @30pics4jackiesdiamond @radiogirl @skipt07

You are all correct- this list was wrong- looked at the wrong calendar which is a regular one- Sunday to Saturday and completely forgot that I'd mapped out the original using the 365 calendar which goes from Monday to Sunday. So good for you for going by the original! I will fix this in the post and make sure I look at the right calendar next week!

But it is fixed now.
February 2nd, 2022
@phil_sandford typo- apologies to you both!
February 2nd, 2022
@ljmanning You are correct- go by the original.
February 2nd, 2022
@pandorasecho You're correct- go by the original.
February 2nd, 2022
@rensala I think you are on there Renee.

@beryl You were correct Beryl- you can untwist now!

@gardencat The original list is correct see the above reply to Jackie et. al. where I explain about mixing up my calendars.

@homeschoolmom Glad you're joining in Lisa!

@skipt07 The original list is the correct one Skip- glad you're taking part!

@mona65 The original list is correct- you were right.

AND THANKS TO ALL FOR CATCHING MY ERROR!
February 2nd, 2022
I knew there was a good explanation. Sorry for all the chaos and thank you for taking care of it Ann
February 2nd, 2022
@grammyn All fixed now!
February 2nd, 2022
Thank you Ann!
February 2nd, 2022
@olivetreeann - and there i thought i was an out and out renegade. 🤣 didn't know there was a 'revolt' that went on. i saw this yesterday and thought 'oh, she changed it' and didn't look again (until now) as i liked the outline in the original announcement. but thanks for straightening this out and a lot more thanks for facilitating this. all's well that ends well. on with the show then!
February 2nd, 2022
@olivetreeann now all we need is for you to add in Mondays and we have 7 days a week 🤗👏🤭
February 2nd, 2022
Well, I guess I'll be out of step, as I went with what was here when I first looked (bw featuring shape) for today, so I'm not really sure what I'll do going forward. Considering that I'm not really a fan of either high key or low key, I'll probably just do my own thing :)
February 2nd, 2022
@koalagardens Monday is not on this week because the month started on Tuesday. The next post will have all 7 days- I promise.

@spanishliz That's perfectly fine Liz. I always want people to have fun and enjoy the month, stretch their creativity and/or get out of their comfort zone. So the last thing I want people to feel is pressured to do something they're unhappy with. Your project, your rules as the saying goes...
February 2nd, 2022
@njmom3 No problem Nada!

@summerfield I think I'll blame the mix-up on my 9 day induced coma. My brain certainly has its fuzzy moments now that I never had before- and it's not like the "old age" fuzziness! Come to think of it, this coma comes in handy for a lot of mis-steps! hehehe
February 2nd, 2022
Thanks Ann for doing this again, and I look forward to participating. Makes sense to me that the list would start on the first day of the month.....going with that list in the original feed.
February 2nd, 2022
@olivetreeann oh yes, OK of course, now I'm following ya 😂
February 2nd, 2022
Oops, I've posted two wrongly now ... So, I'm going to leave what I've already posted, and post day 1 tomorrow, then get back on track. After tomorrow I'll juggle the dates to fit this post, I think! He he.
February 2nd, 2022
@olivetreeann you're a stellar star!!! Hoping your recovery continues in an upward trajectory and that your photography brings joy. Looking forward to your interpretations of the prompts!!
February 2nd, 2022
I’m so easily confused. Hahaha. What should yesterday have been?
February 2nd, 2022
@jnorthington I hear you, Judy. LOL Yesterday's on Feb. 1 was high key.
February 2nd, 2022
Hi! I was a little late but it turned out to be good because I'll try to follow you without this fuss.
February 3rd, 2022
@theredcamera I'm looking forward to your pictures too Ellen! Both the original feed and this post now agree. I corrected it.

@jamibann You can continue to follow what you've already started or change the dates on the ones you've posted- whatever works best for you. The idea of the specific prompts for each day was to create vertical stripes at the end of the month on the calendar.

@jnorthington Feb 1 was high key emphasizing white. But you can follow whatever way you'd like Judy- see the comment to Issi above.

@haskar Glad you're joining in Haskar!
February 3rd, 2022
Thank you for hosting this Ann ... I know it is a lot of work for you. We appreciate it enormously!
February 9th, 2022
@jamibann You're welcome Issi! I enjoy doing it as much as everyone enjoys participating.
