PhotoShop Projects

February 6th, 2017
Lightroom is my go to for editing. This year, I am determined to learn to use Photoshop by doing one project at a time.

I work better when there is a purpose. For years, I have thought this is the year I will learn to do PS, but then I never quite get the drive to keep moving. Maybe it will go better if I learn it one project at a time!

Please post your PS project work here along with any tips or video links for us newbies!

This is simply two photos merged or layered with a 57% opacity on the top layer.

I have seen this style photo a dozen times or more and now I would like to create a dozen of them before moving on to the next project.

@deadschool This is brilliant! WOW. And the extreme black and white completely captures my attention. Can you give us a brief on things like how you took the shots and what you did in PS?
February 6th, 2017
@deadschool I second that, this is beyond awesome :) Would also love to know how you did it.

@deadschool You've got us all captivated! Please, as a learning experience, HOW did you achieve this?!

Thanks, this is 4 images. 2 images of milk that I was pouring out of a container with a square lid, the image of the bowl sitting on the table, and an image of the rope stretched across. In PS it was just a matter of blending the images together using layers and masks. The hardest part was making the milk look like it was actually interacting with the rope. To do that part I used the warp tool and added some shadows. The camera was on a tripod for all the shots so that the perspective was the same. Shooting everything on a black background made everything much easier to blend in PS

@m2016 @Weezilou I just did a little write up, let me know if you have any questions

@deadschool A lot of well thought-out preparation, and beautifully accomplished! I am able to understand all you've explained here, it's said so well.

Jake's masterful piece is clearly "Advanced" PS! May I presume to share the piece I made yesterday...truly noting fancy about it. I pick a base image and C + J duplicates the layer if I need to place something behind it. I then think about what I have archived that might pair with it.
2nd Layer was an envelope, and as you did above, I reduced the visibility of it until It met my needs. (I added a border for my final image would appear to push out a little (Ctrl-Alt +C and pick how much you wish to add.)
3rd layer was the parrot in the zoo. Use the "Quick Selection Tool" under the lasso to pull in all the image you wish to use. Go to "Select" _ Refine Mask, zoom in on a side of your image and start playing with the sliders. You'll find a soft edge and then your image separates from the photo. Drag it to the final image you're working on and it pops up on the picture. To resize the addition, Highlight it and Ctrl-T will make it possible to stretch it. Hold down the shift key if you don't wish to distort the image.

I wanted to keep the explanation simple as possible, so I hope this helps!

This was a double exposure type effect using layer masks to blend the image of my head into the tree. Kind of fiddly to do at first, and it takes a while but once you get the hang of it you can get some interesting effects.
This is the tutorial I used to learn how to do it: https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/make-a-trendy-double-exposure-effect-in-adobe-photoshop--cms-23774

Composite of two shots. Just masked over the bottom of my arm and above it as it was shot against the black background by itself. This reveals the cup and tea bag. Shooting on tripod of course.

@deadschool haha jake 'JUST' a matter of blending using layers and masks :) what a thoroughly awesome, skilled, creative and impressive capture! thanks for the info - so useful to hear how you did it - i might progress to this level in a hundred years or so - but i'm getting there slowly and enjoying trying stuff out, when i used to be scared of it ;)

@swguevin and thank you sheila for the thread - really like your two-layer photo and keep meaning to play around with this kind of thing

Last month I (creepily) turned put my face into a pop tart using the video that I will post below since a post with embed code makes links not work.

It's not the highest of quality productions, but covers what you need.

@scrivna - I'm not sure if you know that this is happening, but when we put an image with embed code in a discussion and also want to have links to other web pages in the message, the links don't work. If we then use a new message and paste the links in there they will work.

@jackies365 Thanks for jumping on board with this really fun photo!
February 6th, 2017
@blueace I see this style from time to time. Definitely on my wish list!
February 6th, 2017
@Weezilou Nice artistic composition. So many options!
February 6th, 2017
@dyanstevens Absolutely adorable! The company should print this on their packaging!

@swguevin Be prepared to fall down the rabbit hole! The possibilities are endless, and you'll build capability as you go!

@swguevin Good idea to work on one type project at a time!

I use an ancient CS2 version of Photoshop, but it does everything that I need it to do. I especially like to create Fine Art Grunge pics from my photos (using photos, textures, and blending modes), and to scrapbook my photos rather than just placing them in a collage. This year I started an Art and Scrapbooking album dedicated to these type photos.

A couple of my examples of this type of PS:

One tutorial that I like can be found at http://digital-photography-school.com/4-steps-to-photoshop-artistry-using-fine-art-grunge-techniques/. Another good tutorial is http://shadowhousecreations.blogspot.com/2014/05/jj-texture-set-walk-thru.html

Thanks for starting this thread! I enjoy seeing what others and doing, and would love to learn more techniques.

@pistache 100 years was my estimate too....better get started now ☺
February 7th, 2017
@deadschool I remember this one, being blown away by it. Now I can understand how you did it, even though it's beyond my skill set to duplicate. Fantastic image!
February 7th, 2017
@deadschool your dripping milk shots are just spectacular... i am in awe of your talent and creativity!

Sheila - i go on PS binges every once in a while... composites and mini-me shots are always fun:

but i've done other things as well:

@northy You, too, have left me scratching my head! What fabulous images!
February 7th, 2017
These are all so wonderful, I've only just started playing around with composites and this a recent one.

@northy such cool photos! Wow!
February 7th, 2017
@deborah63 that is what most of us think the beach looks like when we are young! too fun!

This edit uses the Droste effect on my nephews clock -

or you can put birds into costume

or express post-election darkness in a composite

If you are just starting with photo editing, there are some introductory tutorials on 365 - see @sandbox365 profile page for links to learning layers, and all sorts of editing ideas from the Sandbox 365 Team.

@ltodd Your work is amazing - I love all of them!
February 8th, 2017
@ltodd wonderfully imaginative! Thanks for sharing!!
February 9th, 2017
@ltodd Wow love your work Lyn!
February 9th, 2017
@not_left_handed @swguevin thank you Dawn & Sheila for your kind words. :-D I am so grateful to have joined 365. I started here in 2011 with a load of enthusiasm for editing, and this site has provided so many wonderful opportunities to learn & develop at my own pace with WWYD challenges, & I have always embraced my "lessons learned" ( aka "mistakes") and the fun of ETSOOI. My work has developed through the encouragement of many supportive 365'ers. http://365project.org/tags/edit-lt shows how my work has changed.
February 9th, 2017
@ltodd All I can say is WOW!!! Your work is utterly amazing and I only dream of doing that kind of stuff. I don't have photoshop but I have worked in layers and stuff through Pic Monkey that I've been pleased with, but nothing like what you've done. I know PS is far superior though - hot damn! I wrote the link down so I can refer to it in the future - very well done - I hope you got those printed somewhere in a book!
February 9th, 2017
I'm only learning PS, too. I mostly use PS to do my everyday corrections like removing signs or wires or making a second layer and then blending the mask here and there to emphasize or de-emphasize certain areas of the photo. But I did try once to merge three photos... the bridge, the movie, and then the group on the grass watching...

I think that learning to use free transform or one of the other tools for stretching a shape goes a long ways to help fit two photos together.

February 9th, 2017
@not_left_handed awww thanks!! Picmonkey is a great way to learn what type of editing interests you. I used Paintshop Pro for editing until last year, and at some time you might like to look at Gimp https://www.gimp.org/ for a more complex free editor, but it is not all that user friendly for new users. PS Elements recent versions are quite good too. Feel free to ask me to describe my approach to any of my edits when you are wanting to learn a new technique, and keep an eye out real soon for some editing mentoring on offer from the @sandbox365 team!
