Is There A Way To Direct-Message other members?

July 10th, 2019
There are occasions where I'd like to reach out to another member, outside of the photo comments. Is there some way to do that within the site? You could send a message through the site, and it would appear as an email to them. Perhaps as an "opt-in" feature, at least?

Perhaps most useful would be the ability to provide contact information to another user without having to publish it. Two other recent examples were when someone asked how I did a technique, and when someone asked where an image was taken.

I've used this at sites I frequented in the past, and have a couple of friendships that evolved out of those conversations.

I achieved this on one site by doing a normal post, which would then be delivered as a notification email, and immediately removing the post from the site

That was a good idea from Annie-Sue. I don't think you can communicate with anyone except in the comment section of their pictures.

@anniesue @mittens

Not everyone gets notification emails though so that isn't a reliable option. I only get notifications through the website and therefore if someone commented, then deleted it, I'd never see what it said. That's a good way if you know the recipient definitely receives email notifications, but could fail if not!

i have commented with my contact details on an older post of theirs and then removed once the person has responded.

@kali66 good idea, Kali!

i was going to make the same suggestion as @kali66 ... the other thing you may want to think about is putting extra spaces in an email address so it can still be read by a human, but not scooped up by some web crawler... if you know what i mean...

of course if you want to make it easy for yourself to be contacted you could put that in your bio...

People have been known to create FB groups. I am in two from 365.

I think you can also choose to not publish images publicly but can choose who can see one so you could use that to talk privately? I haven't done this but it could work maybe?

That is an excellent suggestion from KoalaGardens. You could post a photo in an extra album and make it available only to the person you want to contact on the privacy settings and give them an email address. I have exchanged emails with a few people on here and we have immediately deleted the post afterwards.

Lots of great discussion here, and good suggestions.
Thanks all!

@roachling everyone can get email notification, just set it on setting

@koalagardens I think that is the best method bar publishing your email. You can then restrict it to approved friends. So only people you approve can see it. @lsquared

@arnica17 yes, but not everyone wants them so not everyone has that setting ticked - that was what I was saying! Unless you know for sure the person does receive email notifications, you can't rely on the that method.

I have exchanged emails by putting the exchange in an OLD photo, way back where it would not likely be noticed. The notification still goes through to them.
