August 1 marked the beginning of my 10th year here. When I started my intentions were to provide my daughter with a picture a day from home as she headed off to college. That intention was the beginning of a habit that has carried on even after her graduation. My project shows over 3500 photos posted, most with comments and journal entries giving insight to the days or subjects in the photos. I have evolved into mainly a nature photographer, and I appreciate the documentation of the rhythm and flow of the seasons that's grown from this project. The same can be said of the growth and change I see in my grandchildren when I look back through the months and years.
Over the past year or so I've fretted and worried about losing all those memories and am so thankful that Ross @Scrivna created the "Archive" for Ace members. I bought an external hard drive, clicked "Archive," and in a minute or less was able to download a month of memories and pack them safely away. It took only a few hours for me to Archive my whole project. I've seen many posts from people who have lost their photos because life intervened. I wanted to share my experience with "Archive" and encourage anyone who wants to tuck their albums away for safekeeping to be sure and utilize this great addition for 365 members.
@aecasey - thank you, april, for this info. i've been meaning to do this, too, but life and work intervene constantly and when they don't, i fee lazy, so hopefully one of these days. what i would like to know from you is: are the narratives and the comments also get downloaded? advance thanks for the reply.
@summerfield Yes! You get a zip file, which, when opened, gives you a folder. That folder holds all the photos individually, a data file with all the comments in html, and also an html file. When you open the html file it opens a browser window that presents your month in a 365 format ... each photo for the month with its comments that you can scroll through. Very nice.
@aecasey Thanks for this interesting post April, I have been wondering how to go about it. Now that I know, I will give it a try. What size external hard drive did you get?
so happy to see this feature. I am just finishing up my 11th year and also have an extras album. Now I need to go buy the dedicated external drive to back them up. Hope I can figure it out.
this is great, thank you for the info. but my IT store have asked what size external drive i need - but i dont know! Can anyone suggest size needed for my approx 4500 photos and comments please?
@snowy Hi Diana ... I use "my passport" for iMac. I have a couple 2TB, an old 1TB, and my newest is a 5TB which I haven't opened yet. The 2TB runs aound $85 on Amazon. It should be plenty. My 365 project is a little over 4500 photos, and I have a dedicated 2TB which has plenty of room.
I also use "my passport" to back up my computer and I've yet to run out of space.
My daughter-in-law keeps several external hard drives to back up her photos. 2TB sounds like a lot, but I would go a little big so you have plenty of room for your future backups. Good luck!
right April, thank you very much for your reply. I now have the external drive but for some reason cannot find the "Archive" function you refer to! Sorry to be such a pain, but could you please direct me?
@snowy Oops ... didn't remember to message you ... so repeating. Click on "view this month" there on the right above "photo details." In the monthly view look in the upper right hand side and you should see the "Download Archive" function. I found the downloads to be quite fast and you can archive each month this way. Good luck!

I hadn't noticed this feature. I've been trying to keep up but not always on top of things. This will be a great help! Thanks.
