I was not looking forward to today as we have had to have our walnut tree pruned for the third time in seven years. Unfortunately our neighbours on one side do not like trees, apparently they 'make a mess' - that'll be the leaves falling in Autumn then!! If we refuse, they are within their legal rights to trim the tree vertically from where it overhangs the boundary of their garden. I love the walnut tree and it's natural shape would be low branches spreading wide… ours is more of a lollipop shape.
The positive side of this enforced pruning is that we get to see our very good friend Matt from Yorkshire who is an excellent tree surgeon. It is amazing to watch him work as he literally hangs off tiny branches sometimes upside down to carefully trim the tree. Here he is surveying his work. He reassured me that this will do no long term damage and although it did not need to be done, he did a very good job. As a reward he too got dragged to my photographic exhibition at the Landmark Centre (he also got a few chilled beers in the evening!). Thank you Matt.
@kandkids He is very skilled. The tree is still budding leaves, it should be out properly in a month or so. Sadly we never actually get any walnuts as the squirrels always get there first!
It amazes me when people complain about trees. Sure, I don't like stepping on the spiky little things that the sweet gum trees deposit everywhere but it's a small price to pay for shade and beauty. I love the pose of your tree trimmer -- reminds me of my childhood passion for climbing trees. You can see he loves his work.
This looks like a beautiful tree, and having Matt in it makes it a picture one doesn't see every day. I must say I don 't feel well disposed toward your neighbours who don't like trees because they make a mess. Well, nature does makes messes. Perhaps they's like to have the whole world just paved in concrete?
