25th January 2015

This weekend it is the RSPB 'Big Garden Bird Watch'. People are invited to watch the birds in their garden for one hour on the Saturday or Sunday and to record the number of bird species they see. Despite the fact that we usually have a large amount visit the feeders, the birds seem to sense I want to count them and in the end I only recorded 1 robin, 3 starlings, 2 wood pigeons and 5 sparrows!!

This gives me the excellent opportunity to photograph my new beautiful hand-painted baubles that I have just received in the post. They are a present from my friend Stephanie in Toronto and travelled by land mail and so took over a month to arrive. There is a little blue one with polar bears on it as well but I decided to only photograph the birds to celebrate the bird count.

The balls are so small and delicate that I cannot understand how the artist - Judi Myers - can paint so delicately at this scale. I think the bird on the red ball is a Black Capped Chickadee? and on the left is a Northern Loon which I have seen in Jasper in Western Canada. Thank you @Tristansmum - I love them.
Oh Emma, what a thrill to see these in your picture for today, and I'm so glad they arrived safely. I'm sorry they were so late; will try to do better next time. I bought them at the One-of-a-Kind craft show, which doesn't start until late November. Even if I'd airmailed them, they wouldn't have arrived by Christmas. Anyway, thanks so much for posting them here, I have to fav this shot

@tristansmum I am so pleased with them - thank you. I sent you an email to your address ending with 'simpatico' - I do hope Tristan is rallying and feeling a bit better.

Love the detail on these decorations. Emma did the same thing and I saw nothing. The jackdaws and magpies have done a great job in decimating the small birds in our area.
