14th January 2013

I was all set for taking some snow photographs today but we only had half an inch or so which then melted early on in the morning. However, on my way back from a meeting I found this lovely bumblebee in our road. At first I thought he was alive and I hoped could revive him with some sugar water but it was soon pretty clear that he has been a casualty of the cold weather (I think the males normally die during the winter).

I think he is a Buff-tailed Bumblebee - there are apparently 5-species in the UK. I then thought I'd try some macro shots, only to discover that my macro lens has a major fault and will now have to join my favourite 24-70mm f2.8 lens which is going in to be repaired tomorrow!

He ho, I managed this (not very good) photograph against the odds with my (long suffering) husband holding a torch as the batteries in my flash unit also need re-charging. Perhaps my New Years resolution should be to get better organised with my camera kit!!
awwww .. such a beautiful creature, sad! ~ lovely details

I love this little guy. Great clarity on the furry body and wings. What a lovely tribute to him. It is summer here in New Zealand and I am chasing them on clover, me on the ground next to them. But they always seem to be hanging upside down. I want one with them on top with their little feet perched.
