Here in Brittany, a white conical landmark like this one is called an "amer". It is traditionally used to help fishermen to find the deepest or the safest entry path into a harbour. When approaching the harbour, the pilot must drive his boat in such a direction that the amer remains aligned with the spike of the nearest church tower spike.

Can an amer be seen at night or is it strictly a daytime navigational tool? I like all the horizontal lines in this photo.

@k9photo Hi Kate, thanks for your comment. No, it only works during daytime, it is just a big concrete plot painted in white with no light on it.
