Nestled amongst the trees beside the Scotch River on the 8th Concession near St. Elmo, this barn has been used to house heifers for as long as its' owner can remember. “I used to come over here with a team of horses to feed the heifers when I was a kid,” he said. The still sturdy 40' by 80' timber framed barn built in 1921 was constructed without nails to hold it together. Like most barns built in that era, the timbers were hand hewn and spliced together with wooden pegs. “New barns built today won’t stand the way these old barns do,” said the owner.
Great to see these old barns and to hear the history. So many old farm buildings over here have either been neglected and fallen down or converted into dwellings.
