A rather austere beginning for the month of February words!
I knew that getting a regular shot of people swimming here in mid-winter was going to be tough, but I had a back up plan. Or thought I did!
I was going to go to the local feed/pet store where the owner always has aquariums full of colourful fish swimming gaily. Except that he sold out for Christmas and has yet to replace them.
All he had was this lonely Beta hanging forlornly in a bowl by itself without any plants surrounding it for decoration.
So, this is the sad start to my February words!

I do like the Betas, but they are always in their own little bowl for some reason. Maybe they are fighters and putting them in with other fish will wreck their beautiful plumage. Must be sad to be so beautiful that you can't live a normal life.
@farmreporter Yes, they can be rather territorial! I believe they can live in harmony with certain types of fish or other sea creatures, but not with other bettas.
I'm not really sure how the bowl thing came about. People like to put them in teacups and vases and all sorts of strange, tiny places. Its so sad. They should really be in heated and filtered tanks, I think it was 5 gallons minimum, with all sorts of plants and places to hide. Many pet stores don't even know or teach the proper way to care for them. Its such a shame people just see beauty and just do what they like, even if its bad for the poor fish.
