Display of Roman Coffins

This is part of a new display in York's Museum Gardens.These Roman Coffins have been in storage but are now artistically displayed in the gardens.

Nice moss covered coffins. Appear that they were stored outside.

Interesting display and they look like they have been there for years

They are interesting, I saw them recently when I stayed in York. There was also a very friendly squirrel in the gardens.

One of them is half buries as though it was exposed by an earthquake! A nice way of displaying them.

I like that one can see the inside in the one half buried.

@bobhuegel They were in the hospitium originally but not many people would have gone that way to see them. They have also been in the octagonal tower at some stage.

@malc @purplehaze12 @gamelee @janturnbull @bruni I like the way the coffins are much more accessible now and displayed so photogenically. Someone must have been looking after the photographers. katharine

Lovely capture, but what did they do with the bodies ( I assume they are not within)?

@rhos

Thank you Ann. I'm not sure what happened to the bodies, but I suspect little would be left after almost 2000 years. They definitely aren't in the coffins. Thank you for all your comments over the past three days. I know Ian really enjoyed your photos of Wales when he was doing his solo project, so the Fisher Family are now following you!

Interesting way to display them, rather than a museum! Neat pic!

They are certainly novel garden ornaments!
