Kings manor is a group of largely Grade I medieval buildings and a vivid evocation of the past. Originally the Abbot's House of St Mary's Abbey, the King's Manor served the Tudors and Stuarts as a seat of government, becoming residences in the 18th century and a school in the 19th. The history of the King's Manor weaves a continuous thread in the history of York since medieval times.
The Principals House actually dates from 1900 when the site was a school for the blind. I love the way the building blends in with the much earlier constructions to present a cohesive whole.
Kings Manor is part of the University of York which has its main campus in Heslington.
I saw this site a short while ago. We had decided to visit the art gallery and was disappointed to find it was closed, for the next two years! lovely tone and colour in this image.
@miley89 I have a basic point and shoot compact camera, Miley. It was a beautiful morning and I might have thought it was spring if it had been warmer. I think I was just lucky to have been in the right place at the right time. Katharine
@pyrrhula@timrox@dolphin Thank you. Its another example of Yorks wonderful heritage. I think it impressive that the building fits in with the others so well. Katharine
@gamelee Sorry you were disappointed Lee. The gallery has some interesting paintings and displays. You will have another excuse to visit in the future.Katharine
@janturnbull Many of York's buildings have been well used over the centuries and the city fathers have kept an eye on the buildings (with one or two exceptions). Katharine
@bkbinthecity I don't think I have ever seen it looking this attractive, but then I don't always look properly! Its easy just to rush past when in a hurry. Katharine
It's most like the light shining on the facade and the blue dky above that made it look more attractive to you. I love pictures that come straight our of the camara. interesting history too.
Great info to.
