York Minster at Night by fishers

York Minster at Night

I heard that an image of steam locomotive 'Mallard' was to be projected onto Clifford's Tower, so it seemed like a good idea to go and get a shot. Sadly, the projection was poor and out of focus, so not really worth sharing.

However, this was a good chance to take a few more night shots around York, so here is one of the iconic views of York Minster's west end. Night photography here is rather more difficult than it used to be, due to the presence of very bright street lighting. Some formerly good viewpoints are now not possible. Still, I quite liked this viewpoint - I hope that you do too!

That's a shame - a combination of trains and York's architecture would have been right up your street Ian! Nice shot anyway though :)

Nice night shot anyway Ian but understand re the bright lights that can detract. I still think it was worth your journey out :-)

It's such a beautiful building at the best of times and capturing it floodlit at night is something special! Fav

Bob
Very nice night capture. There is a movement in the US to make street lights more restrictive downwards to minimize "light pollution."

@katharinehubbard

You're quite right Katharine, it would have been right up my street! - but I was quite happy to do night shots of some other buildings. I've been intending to do that for a while.

@thresheg

Thank you Graham - perhaps I should charge York's Visitor Centre for all the free publicity I'm giving the city on here!

@bobhuegel

Thank you Bob - there is a similar move here to make street lights more efficient and downward pointing, but for some reason the lights here are much brighter than they used to be and are unfortunately positioned to get shots of the minster from certain angles.
