The Golden Fleece, York by fishers

The Golden Fleece, York

The Golden Fleece pub sign looked very attractive in the sunshine and just asked for its picture to be taken!

The pub was mentioned in the 1503 city archives and is believed to have been named for the guild members of the Merchant Adventurers Hall just around the corner. The guild dealt with fleeces and wool, hence the name.

Today it is famous for being haunted and has been featured on television.

@dolphin @thresheg @bkbinthecity @purplehaze12 Thank you. I seem to have been waiting a long time for the sun to be in the right place to do the sign justice. Katharine

@monkeykid @gillg @tonydebont @pyrrhula Thank you. It hangs in front of yet another of the timber-framed buildings that I love. Katharine

@witchyjacq Thank you. Summer has arrived and true to form we now think it is too hot! I feel even sorrier for the statue in this weather, it must be hot with all that wool. Katharine

@rossevs I have always felt sorry for the fleece and I think it looks sad. We will miss you on the project, Ross, and hope you will come back at some stage. Thank you for all your comments on all our photos. Katharine, Ian, Louise and Lucy

It's probably haunted by the spirit of that sheep they hung up there! He looks so "down" about it all. haha I love the old pubs in England. I have never been to one, but I love the whole idea! Such cool history

@fishers Oh, I just saw you say you felt sorry for the fleece and he looks sad! So you agree! haha

I love these signs over the shops. Hard to find these days. These signs originated when most people were illiterate and couldn't read, so the shops had to be more graphic advertising their wares. Nicely done Katharine.

@espyetta Thanks MaryBeth. I haven't been to one for ages but they all have such interesting history. Katharine

@bobhuegel Thanks Bob. They are much harder to find. There is a downside to being literate! Katharine

@gamelee Thanks Lee. Another one of those"take for granted views" that 365 makes you look at again. Katharine

@fishers This is a lovely photo Katharine, particularly like the colours in the floral arrangements beneath.

Nice shot - I work in York & this is one of those things you know is there but don't take much notice of!

@purpleshelley Thanks. The whole front is nice but is often obscured by traffic. Katharine

@nick689908 That's the magic of 365, it makes you look again at things you barely notice. Katharine
