The Illuminating York festival began on Wednesday and runs until Saturday. A wide variety of lighting effects are used on numerous buildings, and there are interesting illuminated sculptures in various places around the city centre.
Here in Parliament Street we see 'Thor's Oak', the sculpture that Katharine shared with you yesterday, but now complete and in use after dark. I presume the smaller sculptures which were around the base are meant to be acorns.
The Illuminating York brochure says of this 'A sculpted oak tree combining traditional willow work and high tech active lighting. The Vikings had one of the earliest forms of northern European parliaments which were called Things – allowing people of the city to meet and discuss issues and settle disputes' There is an opportunity to share ideas by adding notes to the support ropes of the tree.
I think the efforts of the workmen in yesterday's shot created a fascinating result. I hope you agree!
Thank you Jonathan, I managed to spend two evenings at the event, with the camera, so plenty of shots. Tonight was the final night and the weather is terrible, so I've stayed at home!
Thank you Malc - sadly, the event finished on Saturday night, so Toby's chance to see it has passed for this year. It's an annual event usually the last weekend in October. The next really impressive event is the 'Festival of Angels' on Dec 14th & 15th - Ice sculptures on display and being created in the area around Swinegate. I included shots of it in my solo project last year - http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-12-17,http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-12-18 and http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-12-15
@fishers Whoops, thank you Ian, just re read your narrative which does say that :) The Festival of Angels does look impressive although Toby will probably be home by then. Both my sons have been in York this weekend - should have issued a warning :)
