This mosque was founded in 1926 as a token of gratitude to all the Muslim soldiers from France's colonial empire who died during World War One fighting against Germany. During WW2, the mosque was a secret refuge for many Jews, often providing fake Muslim birth certificates to help them avoid deportation.
Today, it is one of the largest mosques in France, and there is a restaurant in one corner where people of all faiths can eat. The minaret in this picture is 33 metres high. - Lucy
@vignouse Thanks Richard. Well no doubt most guide books would tell you to visit the jardin des plantes at the same time as they're just across the road. But Dad and I found them extremely disappointing, there are far better places to spend your time! - Lucy
