This shot shows a close-up of a carving on one of the wooden beams on the front of the pub in yesterday's shot. It could be seen towards the lower part of the right hand side of yesterday's shot.
The innkeeper is carrying a barrel of ale. Anyone for a drink?
This is brilliant Ian - the detail is amazing considering that this carving must be well weather-worn by now: the inn-keeper apears tt be wearing a sack on his head and shoulders to protect them,as I remember draymen and coalmen used to do when I was a kid.
First of all, apologies for not responding to your comments earlier, but life seems to be running away with me at the moment. Secondly, thank you all for your kind and thoughtful comments, they are really appreciated and are great encouragement. Thirdly, since this post I've discovered there is a second carving on the outside of this building (of the head of the old queen) and there are others inside. More photo opportunities!
