Cartwright Hall is situated in Lister Park, just over a mile north of Bradford city centre, in the Manningham area of the city.
The gallery was opened in 1904 with a collection of Victorian and Edwardian works donated by Samuel Lister. It is named after Edmund Cartwright, inventor of the power loom, which formed the basis of Bradford's prosperity in Victorian times.
The hall is a purpose-built gallery and is home to a collection of permanent works, from Old Masters to 20th century British paintings and sculpture. Cartwright Hall also houses contemporary exhibitions by local, national and international artists, historical exhibitions, craft and media arts and a biennial open exhibition.
Sadly, on the day of my visit it was closed, but it was fascinating to study the building itself and the surrounding park.
Thank you for your lovely comments and favs, they are appreciated.
Exploring more of Bradford was a fascinating experience. I was there to look after our grandson while his parents were at work, since he was ill and unable to go to school. I timed my arrival in Bradford to give me time to explore this area north of the city centre before going to their house, and at the end of my visit I had time to explore south of the city before the journey home, so I will be sharing a few more shots of Bradford over the next few days.
