York City Walls

This shot is certainly on York's tourist trail - for energetic visitors a circuit of the city walls is highly recommended, and for those less able there are short sections which give attractive and unusual views of the city (although it is necessary to be able to climb steps).

This section of the walls is near Baille Hill, one of two large mounds (mottes) on either side of the River Ouse where there would have been castles (originally wooden) during medieval times. This view is looking south-west towards the south corner of the walls. These walls were part of the medieval extension to the original Roman walls. This medieval extension was built between the 12th and 14th centuries.

The walking circuit of the walls takes around an hour, plus extra time for stops along the way - there is even a cafe in on of the old entrances to the city!

Thank you all for your comments and favs, which I'm pleased to say put this shot on the popular page!

For those of you interested in these city walls, there were quite a few shots of them in my solo project during 2012, starting from http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-07-30
