Decorated elephants have popped up all over Sheffield, so on my last visit, dad and I went on mini safari to seek out a few of them. This beauty is at the top of Faregate, for those who know Sheffield.
There are 58 in the Herd of Sheffield in aid in the raising of funds for Sheffield Children's Hospital.
Why elephants?
Well in 1916, on the cobbled streets of Sheffield, an elephant called Lizzie was employed throughout the First World War as the city ’s horses were enrolled by the military. Lizzie played an important role as she had to cart heavy loads of steel and machinery through the city’s streets for Thomas Ward Ltd – a job previously done by horses.
Herd of Sheffield will celebrate the 100th anniversary of this special elephant, as well as front the fund-raising campaign.
Thank you for your lovely comments and favs. I have to admit to loving the many examples of street art in our cities. I like the extra history in this example. I knew that horses were taken for war work but never gave any thought to how they were replaced.
Do you like it at you home?
