My second Moorsbus trip, on Saturday, was with Katharine. We went to Kirkbymoorside, on the southern fringe of the North York Moors, before a short walk westwards to Kirkdale.
Kirkdale is a quiet valley where Hodge Beck cuts it's way through the tabular hills on it's journey south. Just above Hodge Beck is St Gregory's Minster, an interesting and ancient church. The current building was constructed around AD1060, on the site of an earlier Anglo Saxon church. Carved stones from the earlier church are used in building the walls of this church, an early example of recycling.
After our visit to this church we walked back to Kirkbymoorside to catch the afternoon bus over the moor tops for tea and cake at Danby Moors Centre.
A fascinating history. The church looks splendid, with a much smaller tower than I have seen in other (slightly later) similar churches. Sounds like you had a good day out.

This lovely church is in a beautiful setting. Hopefully later in the summer we will visit again and continue on a longer walk up the valley. It is a nice peaceful place to explore.
