Moorland Millennium Cross by fishers

Moorland Millennium Cross

A dull day for a walk on the North York Moors, and we did have some rain later in the day, but Katharine and I thoroughly enjoyed our walk.

The North York Moors is home to many standing stones, some hundreds of years old, and many with fascinating legends attached. It was nice to see the erection of new standing stones to mark the millennium. There are three in the area in and around Rosedale, and the one shown here is the most remote of them (although we were able to get to it by Moorsbus).

This is a rather rough piece of local stone, with a cross and date AD MM (2000AD) carved on it, and the letters NYMA (North York Moors Association - they paid for it) near the base.

Recently a scientific expert has claimed that the indentations on the reverse (right) are the fossilised footsteps of dinosaurs. This is quite possible since I have seen examples of fossilised dinosaur footsteps found not too far from this location.

Agree, it is nice that the tradition of erected engraved stones is still upheld!

That stone has to have double importance for your locality and the carving is very nice and detailed. I was not aware that dinosaurs reached that north.

How fascinating! Reminds me of some of the stones like this around Keswick.

Two levels of ancient on the rock! One wonders if the person who erected it had any idea of what was on the reverse!

Thank you all for your comments and favs, which put this shot on the Popular Page.

These standing stones are quite fascinating. Within a mile of this one there are at least four more, with three of them in good condition, while the fourth is now little more than a ruin. I've no doubt that more of them will feature in our project at some point in the future.
