I'm afraid our tour of Midsomer locations got a little side tracked last week, but here is another attractive location used in 'Midsomer Murders'. Little Marlow is about a mile (1.5km) east-north-east of it's much better known neighbour of Marlow.
Little Marlow is an old settlement. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book, but long before that, there were people dwelling in the area near the river. Bronze Age remains were found when the area was excavated for gravel. The origins of the church were Norman, built in the late 1100s AD. Little Marlow was once the site of a Benedictine convent dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The convent belonged to Bisham Abbey. It was seized by the Crown in the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1547 and was eventually demolished in 1740.
The village is mentioned in Mary Shelley's 1826 novel The Last Man, in a sequence where the novel's protagonist recounts how the village's residents went about trying to prevent themselves from falling ill with the plague.
The village has featured several times in Midsomer Murders, and the pub (the Queens Head) appeared in the final episode of Inspector Morse.
In the autumn of 2020 film crews placed temporary fencing around a field on the east side of the village, and various temporary structures have appeared. It is believed to be a location for filming a new Star Wars spin-off TV show.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
For the film maker, Little Marlow is a good location because there is no through traffic. The road into the village ends by the large white house on the bottom right of the collage.
Thank you Nina - there are so many lovely villages in the area. I bought a little book about the villages and towns used in Midsomer Murders, and it led me to a lot of lovely places, many that I had never heard of before, and which I will now never forget
