My visit to York University on Thursday involved a walk along one side of the lake and watching the variety of wildlife that can be seen. I was quite entranced by the antics of this moorhen as it balanced on a wooden post that just projected from the water of the lake.
Moorhens - sometimes called marsh hens - are medium-sized water birds that are members of the rail family (Rallidae). They are close relatives of the coot, which could also be seen around the lake during my walk.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
The antics of this moorhen trying to balance on this small post were quite entertaining. The big feet made it harder. It was only about 6 feet (2 metres) from the bank where it could have stood quite easily!
