This is quite a contrast to the shot of York University that I posted yesterday. Here you can see part of the mass of new building which took place in the 1960s. These are probably some of the earliest of the brutalist concrete building, since Derwent College was the college where construction started.
Through the centre of this part of the campus (Campus West) there is quite a large lake, with quite a variety of water birds on it. Trees around the lake tend to soften the harshness of the concrete buildings.
Some of these early buildings have been replaced by rather larger buildings that will accomodate more studends, but the redevelopment hasn't reached Derwent College yet.
I do wonder if the buildings right on the waters edge have any problems with damp.
Thank you all for your comments, they are very much appreciated.
I agree that these buildings are a big contrast to Heslington Hall, and when the University was first built these buildings looked rather stark and bleak. However, the years have moderated some of the harshness, with trees, bushes, the lake and wildlife have softened the effect - or perhaps I've just got used to them!
