Snake's Head Fritillary (2)

Not only does the Homestead Park in York have purple Snake's Head Fritillary flowers in its flower beds, but also the less commonly seen cream / white variety, two of which can be seen in this shot.

The name 'snake's head' probably refers to the somewhat snakelike appearance of the nodding flower heads, especially when in bud and as the bud begins to open, on their long stems.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.

It will soon be time for another trip to the Homestead Park to see its latest flower displays. The shots posted over the last few days were taken around 2 weeks ago - things will have moved on since!
