Found this hanging hive at the park today. It sure seemed to be busy with comings and goings every few seconds. There is a picture of the whole hive in my 'This and That" album if you are interested.

These things are nasty. I found a nest in an arborvitae in front of our house some years ago. I started walking toward it and when I was between 20-30 feet away one of them flew right at my face as a warning.
A guy I use to work with told me about his brothers spotting a nest on a telephone pole crossarm. They decided to go out at night and shoot the nest. It was pitch dark because it was out on a rural road. When they turned a spot light on so they could see the nest the hornets flew down the beam of light. The guy holding the light dropped it and they ran to their truck. They said the light was swarming with hornets.
@skipt07 Funny you should bring this up. When I saw the nest I just took pictures with the lens I had with me. Since the nest was up in a tree I couldn't get too close but I had planned to return the next day with my macro lens and a small step ladder to see if I could get some better closeup shots then, that evening I did some research on line about what kind of hornets these were and, after reading that, decided that maybe, potentially annoying them while standing on top of a step ladder would not be a wise thing to do!
