Well, Katniss and Sophie are relaxed AFTER the roofers are done for the day. Katniss panics as soon as she hears the first ladder hit the house.
Today, she spent 3 hours under the bed and 5 hours in the downstairs bathroom with the fan running to help drowned out the noise. Sophie was OK as long as she could be right next to me.
Besides our roof project, I wanted to give you an update on the California fires. We still have 20 fires burning in the state. There has been a drastic rise in the acres burned in California per year.
2011 - 151,357 acres
2017 - 505,956 acres
2018 - 726,329 acres burned and we still have 4 1/2 months to go.
They said that our summers are getting drier and warmer and more people are moving into rural areas. There has also been a change in extreme fire behavior as fires can create their own weather. A pyrocumulus cloud can rise 50,000 feet in the air and create updrafts and downdrafts plus winds up to 165 mph can expand the fire. These winds compare to an EF3 tornado. The fires, sadly, continue...
She’s a well loved kitty, and she knows it. Your fires have been so terrible the last couple of years. I’m so sorry, I appreciated reading your narrative, those high winds, oh my!

A wonderful capture of Katniss, she sounds like our Minky. When the doorbell rings, she's under the bed! So sorry about all the fires and damage. Unfortunately we too have that every summer.
@madeinnl She is use to me always having my phone in my hand...but for every capture I get, I miss 5 great ones. She doesn't stay put for very long, unless sleeping! :)
Thank you, Pam. Like Louise, luckily we do not live close to the fires. It just makes me so sad that beautiful areas, full of wildlife, are in flames. Many homes/structures have been lost, 5 people and 3 firemen have lost their lives...such a tragedy all around.

Not only are cats great at relaxing, they are very therapeutic - I always feel better seeing my cat, Arky, after a fraught or tiring day at work

@4rky Katniss is very relaxing and is also a very sweet and kind kitty. She is kind/gentle with my little 5 pound dog and I am no longer allergic to cats, which were the two things I needed to be able to keep her. She passed with flying colors! I also didn't know what I was missing with the purring! Since I grew up allergic to cats and feathers, I had hamsters, rabbits, dogs and horses instead of a kitty and slept on a foam pillow. :)
@pamknowler Thank you Pam! As with Louise, we are luckily not near any wildfire areas but sad that it occurs and destroys such beauty, homes and wildlife way to often!
@maggiemae No, cats are masters at relaxing with minimal concerns. Plus their purr is very beneficial to not only them but humans too! :)

I would be at a total loss as to how to move forward from nothing...as long as I had my husband and animals...most important!

Katniss does not like the pounding but I have turned on floor fans, bathroom fans and the TV to help drowned out as much noise as possible. I am sure both Sophie and Katniss will be happy to return to our normal relaxed routine...another week to go!

I have floor and bathroom fans and the TV on in the house to drowned out as much of the noise as possible. And when the workers leave for the day, Katniss can get outside for a few hours of peace and quiet.
@ludwigsdiana Yes, Diana! Too much drought and hot temperatures and not enough rain! We might have 5 years of drought, then one rainy year, then back to 5 years of drought! You might wonder why we even need a new roof (haha) but the one year of rain caused damage to the inside that needs to be repaired next! Katniss has gotten use to such a quiet and safe lifestyle, now she jumps at noises and strangers. When she lived outside as a stray, she wasn't afraid of anything! :)

@yogiw Thank you, Sandy!!! The roofers are going full steam ahead! We have the underlayment down, the grid system, the roofing material have arrived and so have the downspouts and gutters! Dry rot repair starts on Monday too. It should all be complete by the end of next week. At the moment, Katniss is content in the dark downstairs bathroom with the fan on and a string of seashell Christmas lights, water and a sleeping mat...lucky girl! She cannot hear the noise and banging as much. :)
Pretty capture of Katniss. The smoke from the Donnell fires is not too bad today but every morning smells like a campfire. Thank God there are no fires close to us. My heart goes out to the firefighters and forest animals.
Terrible about the fires. We have lots of bush fires in New South Wales at the moment too and it is winter here, but so dry.
