A beautiful home in the outskirts of Braemar, currently leased by art dealers (and millionaires, I believe) Iwan and Manuela Wirth (Hauser & Wirth). Photo taken from the Queen's Drive. The Farquharson family settled here in the 14th century, and built a tower house in the 16th century which was remodelled in the late 17th century.
This sort of image simply blows me away! The expanse of that home is amazing, and, as art dealers, what do you suppose the interior is like?! And never mind that amazingly beautiful setting!!! Wow wow and wow!
Oh how I would love to explore this place! Thanks for your kind words Issi - it's certainly been a difficult time but I am so fortunate to have wonderful family and friends both here and on 365. fav
@Weezilou I can only imagine the interior of this place! By all accounts these people are very pleasant, and they have also bought the Fife Arms Hotel, the main hotel in the very small village of Braemar and are doing it up into a 5* Hotel. It will be very interesting to see how it turns out, and I hope that it will bring some more tourists to the village.
@777margo Well, it's known locally as a House, but on Wikipedia it's listed as a Castle. In my 57 years, I've never heard it called a castle, but it does kind of look like one! Not sure where a House ends and a Castle begins!
Excellent, like something from a story book. Perhaps castle means built with defensive architecture? Zooming in on my phone destroys detail but I do see crenulations. Those were originally defensive, later they became decorative.
@fotoblah Yes, given the age, I'm pretty sure it was built as a defensive castle. It no doubt is now referred to as a house as there are no Royal connections.
Wow! This is truly amazing! It would be such a special experience to see something like this in person . . . which is why I MUST visit Scotland at some point in the future. :-)
