On our return from Ireland, having been away for a week, we found this massive mushroom growing against the garden wall at home. I made hubby stick his foot into the image for perspective. I'd love to know if it's an edible mushroom - it would do several breakfast omelettes, I think!
I read a comment recently that if the mushroom has a skirt on it's stalk, stay away from it as it's not edible. Not sure if this is true or not. I am allergic to mushrooms so it's not something I think about. This one looks similar to a parasol mushroom.
Well that is a nice find. Could be a Agaricus Augustus. But you have also to check the underside and the stem. And the flesh would smell a bit of anis or bitter almond. And you should be aware, that even if edible, this mushroom has been found to bioaccumulating the metal cadmium and other heavy metals.
I can still remember the looks on some staff member's faces when I helped with a school trip for the kid's class many years ago. It was a fungi hunt. I said "You can eat ALL fungi.......but some of them.......only once!" The children took a minute, then went wide eyed and some bright spark said "you mean I would die?" "Correct." Funnily enough, no-one in my charge attempted to eat any of them at all that day.......
Great mushie! But I probably wouldn't eat it.......
Gee, that is quite gigantic! What a find! There are loads of mushrooms on the island but I suspect this is a particularly important place to have expertise before cooking it!
That is one HUGE fungi! It'd sure be nice if the edible mushrooms had a unique color to them or something that let us earthlings know whether or not they are safe to eat.
