We've been meaning to locate this shelter stone for quite a while now, but as it's in a remote location, down at the bottom of the cliffs by Loch Avon, it takes a fair effort to get to it. However, Saturday was the day. It was a bit bleak and misty down by the loch!
It's quite an iconic stone and has enough space underneath it for 6 people to sleep! Having been 'inside' now, I wouldn't be to keen to sleep there, but it would certainly shelter you well in an emergency!
It was here that the Cairngorm Club was founded by a group of mountaineers in June 1887.
@maggiemae Oh, yes there were, and I've recently read some diaries of a chap, who, with friends, at the back end of the 1800s, based themselves at the shelter stone, for walks in the Cairngorms. They seemed to live on oatcakes & cheese alone and and had no proper sleeping equipment or clothing. They seemed to survive very well! It must have been very uncomfortable though.
What a wonderful capture of that huge boulder - good for a place to get out of the storm, but don't keep me there too long! Nice shot to share and teach us.
Looks quite a climb to get up there….a great name for the shelter stone….I’m sure it’s been a good shelter for a few intrepid climbers! You climbed away from it too to capture this shot….well done.
You two are amazing & I am so pleased you made it here.
