I should have uploaded this image for the 25th, but ah well, never mind.
I spent a lot of time yesterday with dad at the care home, where they were organising a Burns' Supper. Dad was asked to address the haggis, but he just couldn't get his head around the idea, even just to read it, so like a dutiful daughter, I stepped in and did it for him. I didn't learn it off by heart, but knew a lot of it without referring to my notes. Fair fa' yer honest, sonsie face, great chieftain o' the puddin' race, ... and all that!
The event was simple, but successful. Such hard work for all the carers though, especially having some relatives there too. They do a fantastic job!
This photo was taken on Monday and the coo's belong to the Balmoral Estate.
Fun facts about the coo's ... a herd of Highland cows is called a fold. There are more ginger cows on the Balmoral Estate than black (although black is apparently the dominant colour) because Queen Victoria wanted it that way. And, the female cows' horns turn upwards, whilst apparently the males' turn downwards. There you go!
We have some here in the mountains above us, at about 1000m it may help them cope better with out hot summers. All gingers I think, I'm not sure I've ever seen a black one, but now I know they are disfavoured by royalty my republican self is on their side. We had a Burns supper here some years ago, two Scotsmen wore their kits. I remember French people watching in fascination as one stirred whisky into his haggis.
Fantastic photo, and love the information - I really didn't know lots of that!!! How nice to have the opportunity to do the address to the haggis too. I guess Dad would have been happy with that.
Good for you to do your bit for Burns day.. I saw photos of a friend who is in a retirement Village here with a similar celebration.
Great highland girl photo.. I will be looking at the local 'folds' now to work out the girls and boys
The Burn's supper sounds like a great idea & you did so well standing in for your dad.

Glad the Burns Day celebration was a success and interesting information about the coo's too.
