A wide-crowned, granny pine, standing alone in heather moorland is an iconic feature of our Scottish landscape, and these geriatric trees are always a delight to see. Many of them are well over 200 years old and are the last remaining survivors of the Caledonian Forest which once covered 1.5 million hectares of Scotland.
Great shot, I have seen these but didn't know they were referred to as Granny Pines. That's one of the things I love about 365, you learn something every day!
What a beautiful tree which you have expertly placed in this shot. I can't imagine a forest of them- it must have been magnificent. Hopefully saplings of them will grow once again. Good shot!
