We flew by bush plane back in time to Kennicott, Alaska. The last train left Kennicott in 1938, leaving it a ghost town. Nestled alongside the magnificent Kennicott Glacier, Kennicott was a thriving copper mining town in the early 1900s. After enjoying a fascinating tour of the Concentration Mill (which processed the ore collected from the mountains 5 miles above) as well as numerous other buildings, we stayed overnight at a welcoming lodge in the town and tried to imagine living the isolated lifestyle of the Kennicott men, women and children. I purchased a book written by a woman who was born and spent the first 7 years of her life in Kennicott, and I can’t wait to read it!
@juliedduncan It was a fascinating town! To think that it was a thriving, bustling town for 30 some years and then just deserted...amazing. Hopefully, you'll get to visit sometime!
Sounds like a great trip! How did you learn about that? There are so many places like this across the US. I wish we could use places like this as a way to get the economy going again. Great b/w!
@olivetreeann Thank you! It was an outstanding 10-day trip booked through Explore Tours. We experienced frontier towns, hikes, museums, whale watching, glacier cruises and so much more! We'd cruised the Inside Passage in Alaska a few years back and wanted to explore more of the interior this time. There's beauty everywhere you look!
@milaniet Thanks! The town was unforgettable. I find myself still thinking of what life must have been like in that secluded spot in the Alaskan wilderness.
